Empty pizza boxes clog central Tampere bins, driving cleanup costs into hundreds of thousands of euros

Empty pizza boxes have been blocking public bins across central Tampere this summer, creating extra work for city maintenance crews.

The local paper Tamperelainen says the surge is forcing more frequent emptying and pushing annual cleanup costs into the hundreds of thousands of euros.

City maintenance manager Jussi Pesonen says the problem grows during the summer and spikes on event weekends. A single cardboard box can wedge the bin opening so tightly that other rubbish cannot be added, forcing crews to empty containers several times a day.

Pesonen suggests leaving flattened boxes on top of bins rather than stuffing them inside, so the bin can hold more waste. Crews typically begin cleaning between 4 and 5 a.m. and usually finish before noon. Heavily littered areas can take up to four hours to clear.

The extra expense comes mainly from staff wages and waste fees. The city brings in large temporary bins for big events such as festival weekends and the upcoming Eppu Normaali farewell concerts, but unexpected gatherings can still overwhelm services.

The problem echoes earlier temporary-bin overflows in Vuores that followed the end of a pneumatic tube collection system, and comes after the city's spring cleanup drive that organised extra bins and volunteer teams to tidy parks and streets.

Pesonen says park cleaners sometimes find human feces. Last summer, Sorsapuisto needed changes after someone accessed a birdcage area via the pond and defecated there.
