Huittinen moves ahead with new fire station planning in Junttila

Huittisten kaupunki announced that its city council will launch a zoning plan change for Junttila and start drawing up an area plan for a new fire station. The planned site is in western Huittinen town centre, in the southwest corner of the junction of Nokkamäentie and Tampereentie, on roughly a 6-hectare plot owned by the city.

The city says it identified the area as the most suitable location for the future station in a 2022 need assessment. However, the existing regional plan does not support the plan as intended: part of the area is currently reserved for a road (LT) and part for land for agriculture and forestry (M-1). The LT reservation has been tied to a planned but unrealised grade-separated interchange at Härkäpakari, and a 2024 implementation assessment found that the reservation is no longer suitable, meaning the regional plan has become outdated and must be updated to match current needs.

Huittinen notes that updating the zoning will also help align traffic arrangements and land-use planning at both general and detailed zoning levels. The change would replace the current land-use purposes with provisions that allow the new fire station to be built and the area to be taken into construction use. The indirect impacts highlighted include effects on traffic flows and arrangements, the community structure, the landscape and cityscape, and the functioning and development potential of critical basic services.

The city council has also decided to put the participation and assessment plans (OAS) for the zoning documents on public display. The OAS sets out how residents and other stakeholders can participate, how the impacts will be assessed, and the preliminary timetable and communication channels for the process. The plans will be available for comments from 26 March to 24 April 2026, during which people can submit their views to the city administration.
