Lielahti–Ylöjärvi tramway plans presented on April walking tours

Tampere Ratikan announced that it will organise guided walking tours in April to let residents familiarise themselves with the planned Lielahti–Ylöjärvi tram route, including how pedestrian and cycling connections would change in several areas.

The programme includes a Soppeenmäki walk on Wednesday 1 April 2026 starting at 17:00 near Soppeenmäen yhtenäiskoulu (Koulupuisto 2). Participants will follow the planned tram alignment towards Tampere along routes including Hartuntie, Soppeentie and Mikkolantie, with a stop at the junction with Sauriontie for discussion. During the walk, the organiser says participants will learn about updated access routes to the yhtenäiskoulu and the sports hall, as well as three planning options for where the Soppeenmäki tram stop could be located, with the tram positioned either in the middle of Mikkolantie, along its sides, or north of Mikkolantie. The options are assessed from the viewpoint of tram and bus stops, car traffic, public transport riders, pedestrians, cyclists, and the nearest properties.

A second walk focuses on Teivo and Lamminpää on Thursday 16 April 2026 at 17:00. The group meets at the southern entrance of Teivo racecourse (Velodromintie 2) and first tours planned access routes to the Teivo tram stop in the direction of Ylöjärvi, including walking and cycling connections along the edges of Ravitie that lead to the underpass at the main road and to a planned stop located near an existing wooded area. The route then continues towards Tampere’s Lamminpää and Nauhatehdas areas, where planned walking and cycling connections beside the main road and the location of a tram bridge crossing the main road will be examined, with stops for discussion.

The walking tours are described as being mostly on footpaths and wheelchair-accessible, with route lengths of about 800 metres in one direction for the Soppeenmäki walk and about 1.5 kilometres in one direction for the Teivo and Lamminpää walk. The organiser says the estimated duration for both tours is around 1.5 hours and that no prior registration is required. Draft route plans will also be presented in public events and through a map-based feedback survey in early autumn.

Tampere Ratikan adds that a project plan is currently being prepared for the Lielahti–Ylöjärvi tramway, to be completed in April 2027, after which the city councils of Tampere and Ylöjärvi may decide on starting detailed design. The indicative timetable mentioned includes implementation design in 2029–2031, construction in 2032–2035, and tram operations from 2036 onward.
