NRC Group Begins Work on Rauma Passenger Halt to Restore Rail Service by 2027

According to NRC Group, work has begun on a new passenger halt in Rauma, with earthworks and foundation-strengthening under way and initial piling and electrification changes scheduled for this weekend. NRC Group, the contractor on the project, said crews have carried out test piles to study the ground and are preparing the foundation works. "This coming weekend we will do the first piling operations and electrification changes during a longer rail traffic interruption," said site manager Tino Orell.

The project includes a 120-metre platform north of the track and a separate contract for a canopy, along with renewed lighting, updates to track safety equipment and new passenger information systems. The firm will also build a feeder parking area east of the new Leikarinkatu and access routes to the north side of Hakunintie, plus a pedestrian and cycle link connecting the platform area to the Leikarinpolku underpass.

The Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency selected NRC Group as contractor for a scheme with a total budget of about €3.8 million; the agency is the project's developer and the City of Rauma will cover the building costs. NRC's share of the contract is just under €3 million. Project director Esa Juhantila highlighted the firm's experience in rail yard and platform work and noted it also maintains port tracks in Rauma.

Rock blasting to begin work on the parking area is due around the end of May. The overall Rauma halt project is scheduled for completion in 2026 and is intended to enable the resumption of passenger services on the Rauma–Kokemäki–Tampere route in spring 2027, ending almost a 40-year gap in regular service.
