Most Movers Leave Tampere for Larger Apartments or Plots, Survey Finds
Most people who moved from Tampere to nearby towns between 2020 and 2026 did so to find larger apartments or plots, with 88% saying housing availability was a significant factor. Moves were often prompted by life changes such as starting a family, and many respondents said they might consider returning to Tampere.
A study commissioned by the City of Tampere found that people who moved from the city to neighbouring municipalities between 2020 and 2026 overwhelmingly cited the need for a larger apartment or plot, Tamperelainen reported.
A phone survey of 277 movers carried out by Bondata Research Oy in June 2026 found that 94 percent said housing or plot availability influenced their decision to some extent, and 88 percent called the effect significant. Life changes such as starting a family were common triggers, and respondents also highlighted a more comfortable residential environment and easier daily routines. Despite the relocations, 73 percent said they might consider returning to Tampere, and many still rate the city's services, cultural offerings and public transport as important.
Jaakko Mustakallio, chair of the Housing and Real Estate Committee, said the results will guide Tampere's housing development. The city plans to boost the supply of family-sized apartments and to use the findings to inform zoning and plot allocation as part of its housing and land policy implementation.
