Robot couriers hit Tampere streets as Wolt and Starship launch food deliveries
Wolt and Starship have launched robot food deliveries in central Tampere, with around ten robots serving over 25 restaurants within a two-kilometre radius of the city centre.
The service launches on Thursday in central Tampere, with about ten robots operating within a two-kilometre radius of the city centre and serving more than 25 restaurants, including Lapintie Kebab Pizzeria, Pizzeria Napoli Tampere and Social Burgerjoint Tampere, Aamulehti reports.
Customers order through the Wolt app in the same way as for grocery robot deliveries. The robot's lid opens from the app and the delivery can be tracked on a live map.
The rollout follows earlier robot projects in the region: grocery delivery robots were expanded to several Tampere districts earlier this autumn, and in September Wolt-backed Agronomy began delivering local Pirkanmaa food in under an hour launched in September.
The machines are roughly 99 percent autonomous. They rely on GPS, artificial intelligence, 12 cameras, ultrasonic sensors and radar to plan routes and detect obstacles, and a human operator can take control if needed, Starship says. Wolt and Starship say robot food and grocery deliveries are already in use in Helsinki, Lahti, Espoo, Kuopio and Jyväskylä.
