Tampere is pressing ahead with plans to expand the Tampere Art Museum at Pyynikintori, adding two new buildings, an underground public level and accessibility upgrades. Construction is slated for January 2027 to December 2029, with the museum due to open in spring 2030.

A new, accessible museum complex at Pyynikintori will renovate the existing buildings and add two structures, Siilo and Paja, connected by an underground level that will house public circulation space and museum support facilities. City of Tampere officials expect the expanded site to draw about 180,000 visitors a year.

Deputy Mayor Jaakko Mustakallio called the project a major investment in the city's culture and appeal, saying it blends valuable heritage buildings with contemporary exhibition needs.

Construction is scheduled to start in January 2027, finish in December 2029 and allow the facilities to open in spring 2030. The implementation cost is estimated at EUR 37.26 million. That is about EUR 976,000 higher than earlier planning figures, a rise the city attributes to refined plans, museum-specific technical solutions and measures to protect culturally valuable buildings. The city board will next decide whether to approve the implementation plan and contract, and the Housing and Property Committee’s agendas and minutes provide further details of the proposal.
