National Traffic Reroute and Vaitinaro Interchange Move Forward Near Hiedanranta

Plans to reroute national traffic alongside the railway and build a grade-separated interchange at Highway 12 and main road 65 near Hiedanranta are moving forward. A public information event on the proposals will be held on Thursday 1 October, 17:00–19:00 at Lielahti school.

The Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment for Inland Finland is preparing the road plan, while the city advances zoning and street design work in parallel. The proposals would keep local traffic roughly on the current route via Enqvistinkatu, shift national traffic (main road 65) next to the railway and create a grade-separated interchange at Vaitinaro to secure long-term capacity and smoother flows. Noise mitigation is planned along the road edge. New pedestrian and cycling arrangements and access points are also included.

City planners say the interchange and rerouting would free up space for Hiedanranta’s planned development and interact with ongoing Lielahti to Ylöjärvi tram planning, affecting future traffic in Lielahti. The zoning plan process is already under way, with a draft targeted for public display in spring 2027. All plans will be presented and open for public review at the Lielahti school meeting. Coffee will be served.

The work builds on recent plans and wider efforts to free land for dense, green housing and improved tram connections the Hiedanranta masterplan and follows earlier decisions to relocate the shunting yard to enable new development the shunting-yard relocation programme.
